UPDATE: Wichita Falls city officials said one of the two employees who were injured in an incident at the River Road Wastewater Treatment Plant died.

Daniel Arredondo died Sunday morning at 11:57am just one week after a hazmat situation at the treatment plant.

Arredondo worked for the wastewater treatment division for a year and a half.

City officials said their hearts are saddened by his passing, and they send their prayers and thoughts to his family. Fire officials said unknown gases are likely to blame for the incident, but the investigation is ongoing.

ORIGINAL STORY

Two River Road Wastewater Treatment Plant workers are in critical condition following a hazmat incident Saturday in Wichita Falls. Fire Department officials said they received a call around five that an unknown number of people were possibly in the basement of the plant doing repairs.

They were found unconscious.

Once crews arrived to the scene they jumped into action.

“So two rescues were made. The two individuals were semi-responsive. Both of them were transported to the hospital, and from what I understand, at this point they are being air-evaced to Parkland,” said Todd Mudd, WFFD Battalion Chief.

Mudd said unknown gases are likely to blame for the incident, but the investigation is ongoing.

Officials said there was no threat to the public because the situation was contained to the facility.
However, road access was closed for a period of time to make sure the injured workers could be rushed to the hospital.

Two other employees went back into the area to finish the repairs, and put the plant back online.
