Eric Paslay tips his ball cap to divine intervention on “Angels in This Town,” the second single from his upcoming Dressed in Black.
Hitting country radio nine months after the debut of Dressed in Black‘s kickoff single, “High Class,” “Angels” finds Paslay teaming up once again with “High Class” co-writer Corey Crowder. Rounding out the songwriting trio is Erik Dylan, who helped pen Kip Moore’s “Comeback Kid.” Together, the three writers fill “Angels in This Town” with some familiar ingredients of today’s Top 40 country hits: an all-American setting on the high-school football field, an R&B-worthy drum loop and, during the song’s fast-moving verses, a melody that owes as much to pop music as country. Paslay, who sings the chorus in an Everyman voice that rarely overreaches, has already turned the song into live staple, performing it nightly during his summertime gig as Toby Keith’s opening act.
Initially known as a songwriter for other artists, Paslay scored chart-topping singles for Eli Young Band, Jake Owen and Rascal Flatts before his solo debut, 2014’s Eric Paslay, earned him three hits of his own.Dressed in Black looks to continue that streak. While the album’s release date has yet to be announced, Paslay has a summer’s worth of dates ahead of him, including the final leg of Keith’s Interstates & Tailgates Tour.
