DART Officer First Killed In Line Of Duty In Department History

Five police officers were killed in Dallas Thursday when gunshots rang out in the middle of a protest of recent police violence.

Dallas police are in the process of releasing the names of the victims.

Brent Thompson, 43, was a Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer who had gotten married two weeks prior to the shooting, according to a DART representative.

He is the first DART officer to be killed in the line of duty since the department was established in 1989. He joined the department in 2009.

DART released a statement about his death:

“As you can imagine, our hearts are broken. This is something that touches every part of our organization. We have received countless expressions of support and sympathy from around the world through the evening. We are grateful for every message. Thank you.”

The family of Dallas police officer Patrick Zamarripa, 32, confirmed he was one of the officers killed.

The Washington Post reported that Zamarripa served three tours of duty in Iraq. He was married and had a 2-year-old daughter.

His father, Rick Zamarripa, posted the news to Facebook and later shared a post from a cousin that included a picture of Zamarripa and his daughter. Zamarippa’s stepbrother also tweeted a picture.

krolMichael Krol

The sheriff’s office in Wayne County, Michigan, confirmed Michael Krol was killed in Dallas.

Krol, 40, had previously worked for the sheriff’s department from 2003 to 2007. He had been a member of the Dallas PD since then.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon released a statement on Krol’s death:

“We are saddened by the loss of the dedicated officers in Dallas—one of whom was a former member of this agency—and also the wounding of the other officers. Those officers made the ultimate sacrifice and died honoring their oaths to protect and serve.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families and also the Dallas Police Department.”

The name of the other officers have not yet been released. We will update when they become available.
