The thought of open carry has caused heartburn with some law enforcement at the Republican National Convention, with the police union concerned enough to ask for emergency measures during the event.

The open carry of firearms is allowed in Ohio, Cleveland and within the event area – with the exception of a small, fenced-off secure area around Quicken Loans Arena, the site of the convention.

The head of Cleveland’s police union pleaded for a temporary suspension of the law, but Gov. John Kasich said his hands were tied.

“Ohio governors do not have the power to arbitrarily suspend federal and state constitutional rights or state laws as suggested,” Kasich said.
